How do botulinum toxin treatments work?
The mechanism of action or process behind these treatments generally works the same for all such products, whether we are talking about Botox®, Dysport® Xeomin®, or Jeuveau® (also available at our office!). This highly purified neurotoxin is the active ingredient in a gel-like formulation. This formulation is then injected gently into precise points of the face using ultra-thin and sterile needles. Once introduced to targeted muscles underneath the skin, the toxin goes to work to disrupt muscle activity. By interfering with the chemical signals that tell muscles in a given area to contract, the skin stays taut and smooth. In other words, these products get to the very heart of the source of expression lines: the muscle contractions that lead to forehead wrinkling, frown lines, and more.
How did my expression lines become so persistent and severe in the first place?
The skin between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and around the eyes is prone to wrinkling. A small groove or indentation forms underneath the skin’s surface when you frown, squint, smile, or concentrate heavily. In young skin, these wrinkles are dynamic and subtle, only noticeable as you squint or move your face. However, when the skin ages and loses its flexibility, these lines can become permanent fixtures of the face, and they can be quite severe – making deep imprints in specific areas that are most at the mercy of facial movements (such as the forehead).
What can I expect from Dysport® treatment?
For starters, there is little to no preparation. It’s a true lunchtime procedure, too. So you don’t have to set aside much time for treatment. After the skin is cleansed, Rachel or one of our highly qualified aesthetic injectors will apply this unique formulation to each of the five points above and between the eyebrows (and other areas, depending on your needs). The solution is injected with very fine needles and special precision techniques. So, it is generally tolerated well by most patients, as most experience little more than a fleeting “pinch” as the needle comes in contact with the treatment sites.
All of this can be done in just 10 to 20 minutes. You can be on your way immediately with little more than mild and temporary injection-site redness and puffiness. The only thing we may ask for after-care is that you refrain from any behaviors or activities that could cause the solution to “migrate” to other parts of the face; for instance, refrain from rubbing at the injection sites.
